German Curriculum to IB Maths AA: What Students Should Know Before They Make the Transition
For many students moving from the German school system into IB Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches, the challenge isn’t simply learning new mathematics. It’s learning how the mathematics is written, asked and assessed.
The symbols may look slightly different. Mathematical terminology changes. Questions are structured differently. And perhaps most importantly, students have to learn what the examiner expects to see in their working.
These differences become much easier once students know what to look for — and have practised working with them.
German Maths → IB Maths AA:
What's Actually Different?
1. The mathematics may be familiar. The language of mathematics may not be.
These are some of the differences I have noticed when working with students who have moved from the German education system into IB Maths.
- Mathematical symbols and notation
- Mathematical vocabulary
- Question wording and command terms
- How questions are structured
- How marks are awarded for working and reasoning
2. The Same Mathematics Can Look Different
A German Abitur sample from Baden-Württemberg, for example, uses decimal commas in mathematical contexts — the paper includes values such as 7,23 and 0,5 — and interval notation such as 1; 1,4.
These aren’t difficult mathematical differences, but they’re exactly the sort of small conventions that can make a student stop and think when they’re already under pressure.
3. Mathematical terminology - You Can Know the Mathematics and Still Not Know What the Question Is Saying
For Example
German: Steigung
English: gradient
You’ll see it in questions such as: “Find the gradient of the curve…”
What you’re being asked to do:
Differentiate the function, then substitute x = 2 into f′(x).
In German, Steigung is used both for the slope of a straight line and for the gradient of a curve at a point. In IB, when a question asks for the gradient of a curve at a specific point, it always means the derivative evaluated at that point — never the slope between two points on the curve.
The related trap: mittlere Änderungsrate (average rate of change — the gradient of a chord) and momentane Änderungsrate (instantaneous rate of change — the derivative) both appear in IB papers as “rate of change”. Only the surrounding wording tells you which one is wanted.
4. Question wording / command terms
For Example
German Abitur uses commands such as:
“Berechnen Sie…”
“Zeigen Sie…”
“Begründen Sie…”
“Bestimmen Sie…”
“Geben Sie an…”
IB uses commands such as:
“Solve…”
“Hence show…”
“Determine…”
“Explain…”
The words tell the student what kind of response is expected.
The IB itself defines, for example, “calculate” as obtaining a numerical answer showing relevant stages in the working, while “hence” means using the preceding work to obtain the required result.
5. IB Questions Can Build a Chain of Reasoning

An IB question isn’t always a collection of unrelated exercises. Later parts can depend on ideas, results or relationships established earlier.
One thing I work on with students is recognising that structure before they start calculating. It changes how they approach the question.

Who is the IB Maths AA Bridging Programme for?
This is particularly useful for students who are about to start IB Maths AA and aren’t sure whether their current mathematics is strong enough for the course. Some students have good GCSE results but haven’t yet developed the algebraic fluency or problem-solving habits that IB requires. Others simply want to start the Diploma feeling prepared rather than spend the first term trying to catch up.
